Spousal legalities

Earlier today, someone came to the door looking for my husband.   I explained that he was away but as his wife I was happy to help.   They refused to tell me what the issue was, instead writing it out and then sticking it through our mail slot.

In the states, I’d imagine the legality varies from state to state (as we’re a federation), but generally, a wife can speak for a husband and vice versa.  Even where it might not be strictly legal, it’s very common.  For example, my husband can probably call my doctor at home and get my medical records, unless I specifically tell them that NOBODY should see them but me, even him.

I’m starting to suspect this is not the case here.   At first, I thought I was just getting the “poor little wifey” attitude from people who felt my husband was more capable than I simply because he’s a guy.  But now I’m wondering if it’s just because his name is on things and they really can’t allow me to help them.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?
