I often imagine I’d learn more about the local culture if I could bring myself to turn on the television once in a while. Let’s face it, though - I’m not really a tv person and never was, and that’s not likely to happen.
However, I am a radio person. I work from home and usually you’d find me listening to something like Boards of Canada while I do brain intensive things, but I have been turning on Diversity instead, and find I’m rather enjoying it.
Chicago has an absolutely wonderful public radio station (WBEZ!) but as Chicago is so BIG and I lived about an hour outside of it, it was quite normal for the “local” events to be an hour or two from home. The ones I hear about on Diversity are usually about 10-30 minutes. It’s fun.
